Casket … rhymes with basket.
I sat down with Lindsey today to explain that she would see her sister tomorrow at the wake. I explained that Ashley would be in a casket and I went on to describe what it would look like. I explained that all of our friends and family would be there to say good bye to Ashley and that many of them would want to hug her and talk to her, including many family members whom she’s never met. She asked what a casket was and then said “Mom, casket rhymes with basket”. She’s five and despite the fact that in the past year and a half the words cancer, chemo, and radiation have all become part of her everyday vocabulary … in that moment I was reminded that she’s five.
